Save Preston Market

Are They Kidding? : Darebin Council claims surprise that the Preston Market development has been fast-tracked

It is incredulous that council had no knowledge of the possibility that Preston Market would be fast-tracked when it appeared on the State Government list long before the announcement.  If as they claim below, they have been ‘working alongside the Stage Government agency for two years’ what have they been doing?   Remember it was this council that handed the decision making to the Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne.  It was a great failing of the community and they should have been more prepared to fight for the market on behalf of us.

Susanne Newton misleading comments regarding the future of Preston Market

DADA continues to call out Councilors for misleading comment on the future of Preston Market.

Susanne Newton says there are no plans to move the market away from the current site. (see her twitter feed below) Those of us who objected to the Stage 1B and 1C redevelopment of Preston Market saw the plans, in the future staging document, for moving the market to the corner of the site into a building with apartments above.(evidence posted here: https://www.darebinada.org/campaigns/preston-market-update-21st-of-may-2020)

It is a lie to say that there are no plans and misleading to confuse the whole site with the current site.

If Susanne Newton really wanted to save the market she would have voted for council support of the community led heritage application.  She would also have voted for the suggested amendments for tighter planning controls at the general council meeting on May the 18th.  Instead she voted to keep options open including the option to demolish and rebuild the market on the corner of the site.

Misleading: Susanne Newton’s re-election post

Cut from her facebook post but not edited Susanne Newton’s claims below about delivering for our community on Preston Market are totally disingenuous. It was within her power to vote for amendments, to the last council resolution, to protect Preston Market from being demolished, moved and rebuilt elsewhere on the site. Instead she stood in the chamber and spoke and then voted against suggested amendments in favour of ‘keeping options open’.

DADA is in no doubt this includes the option, preferred by the developer, to demolish, move and rebuild the market on the corner of the site with apartments above it. (see previous posts on this) https://www.darebinada.org/campaigns/preston-market-update-18th-of-may-2020

If you love Preston Market and want it to stay where it is then you should not vote for this person.

Victorian Socialists Campaign Promise to Save Preston Market

We hope they are more genuine in this promise than the current crop councilors who made the same promise at the last election but have failed to commit to saving the market in situ.
